There is ALWAYS some part of ANY yoga pose (asana) which EVERYONE can do - this is how we present the practice to you. If you can breathe, you can do yoga!
Yoga aligns your mind, body and spirit, eases tension, supports your health and well being. Regular practice promotes authentic participation in your life.
Yoga involves more than your body; it develops awareness and meditation. Integrate this heightened awareness into daily life and connect to your Self with clarity.
Attending a class in our cozy studio is the preferred way to practice yoga. Mats, blocks, and other props are provided to ensure accessible postures. In-studio classes often include work on the Great Yoga Wall—the ultimate yoga prop—designed for adding traction to your practice.

What do we mean by "somatic practice"?
To quote yoga teacher & choreographer Suniti Dernovsek:
"Somatic practices are about getting to know ourselves more intimately; entering a safe and informed practice that responds to our ever-changing needs as dynamic organisms; reclaiming the ability to make our own choices about our bodies."
As a somatic practice, SATYA comes from the inside out. We begin lying supine, on the floor, on a sticky mat covered with a blanket which allows for sliding and gliding movements that provide recovery and deep rest, as we alternate between movement and stillness. Participants follow verbal instructions rather than visual demonstration, as each person is encouraged to be guided from within. The slow movements linked with breath give the opportunity to focus on the inner experience, to expand internal awareness and reveal to ourselves our own habit patterns of movement. SATYA is designed as a sister practice to Asana; the 11:30 a.m. class consists of SATYA followed by asana. Beginners are welcome.
Here is SATYA founder Tias Little describing his practice:

in the Old Industrial Area,
you’ll find us in the cul-de-sac at the end of Pawai Place.
We’re nestled amongst restaurants, a coffee stop and retail shops.
Allow ample time to navigate the traffic on your way to class.
Arrive early so you’re assured leisurely parking in this newly revitalized part of Kona Town.
It's a fact that every body is different. Using props honors this fact; they help you practice in a way specific to you!
We have just about every prop you never knew you would use -
mats, belts, blocks, wedges, blankets, bolsters, chairs,
Three Minute Eggs, sand bags and of course, the Yoga Wall.
We are also air-conditioned, a welcome reprieve from the Kona heat!
I first experienced yoga in 1992 at college, a Sivananda class. In 1997 I began regularly practicing in the Ashtanga tradition and several years later explored the alignment based approach of Iyengar yoga. Today, I focus in Purna Yoga®, having completed a 500-hour Purna Yoga® Teacher Training in June 2020 with Aadil Palkhivala and a 200-hour training with him in August 2014, as well the 200-hour Purna Yoga® Teacher Training in May 2011 with Jennifer Weinert of Hilo Yoga.
I look forward to sharing yoga with you in private or small group lessons in the tradition of Purna Yoga®. Purna means complete, so in addition to asana (the physical postures), I offer meditation, the Yama and Niyama (practices for supporting the Self and living with awareness) and nutrition to complement to your regular self-care routine.
I have been teaching yoga in Kona for over twenty years, having been extensively trained in both the Iyengar and Purna traditions. Within the last ten years, I have studied the SATYA practice with Tias Little, founder of Prajna Yoga, and am a certified SATYA teacher. Aside from Aadil Palkhivala and Tias Little, I have received training with Janet MacLeod, Julie Gudmestad, Marla Apt, Leslie Kaminoff, Amy Matthews and Ray Madigan, among others. During the pandemic I have been privileged to attend Zoom classes in therapeutics
with senior Iyengar teachers Patricia Walden, Gloria Goldberg, Chris Saudek, Bobby Clennell and Eric Small. I have also been teaching my own Zoom classes.
It has always been my privilege and my joy to share my love of Yoga with others. I am so grateful to once again be able to be doing this in person at beautiful StudiOm. Deep bow of appreciation to my colleague Yuki for the opportunity.
In the rest of my life I am a massage therapist and teacher of Therapeutic Touch. In addition, I am the parent of six adult children who continue to amaze and teach me.
In all the training I have received, the over-arching philosophy is the necessity to relate to each individual with safety as a priority.
I was so pleased to recently get this review:
"Julie is a wonderful patient Yoga instructor. Enjoyed her Zoom class from the comfort of my home. Highly recommend her classes. New to Yoga and didn't feel the least uncomfortable in my first class."
I welcome your interest and questions. You may call or text: (808) 960-3310
